Andean Condor
Comprehensive Plan for the Conservation of
CONDOR SANCTUARIES FOR THE CONSERVATION OF NATURE (SCCN)
As an action strategy, we are working intensively with environmental authorities across the country to declare the Protected Natural Areas in the various provinces where this species lives as Condor Sanctuaries for Nature Conservation (SCCN) . Together, they represent a network of biological corridors declared of federal interest by the Federal Environmental Council (COFEMA Res. 386/2018).
Due to its high flight capacity, the species requires biological corridors made up of Sanctuaries: Protected Natural Areas where the conservation of the Andean Condor and its ecosystem are of particular interest and where active management work is carried out.
Collaboration agreements have been established with the Provincial Environmental Authority, within the framework of the PCCA, to develop actions in these natural areas, focused on the care and conservation of this emblematic species and the balance of its environment.
In the SCCN:
-
They develop environmental education activities, generating specific material that highlights the species and the dangers it faces, highlighting the need for its conservation.
-
Population censuses are conducted to keep an up-to-date record of population dynamics and composition. Their roosting and nesting areas are protected.
-
They work on training staff , especially to assist in the rescue of injured or at-risk specimens.
-
They undertake scientific studies that expand our knowledge of their biology and conservation status to ensure their survival.
-
It is hoped to continue incorporating more private, municipal, provincial, national, and international areas to create a Network of Protected Natural Areas for the Conservation of the species.
Currently, 69,184 km2 have been declared SCCN (National Protected Natural Areas) in the provinces of Neuquén, Mendoza, Jujuy, San Juan, Tucumán, Salta, Córdoba, and San Luis.
