LEAD POISONING

Another main reason why condors arrive to the Rescue Centre is from lead poisoning.

LEAD INTAKE

The primary source of lead in the environment is due to hunting activities, where dead animals left in nature have in their body hazardous lead chips or remains of lead from the bullet trajectory.  When the condor, as well as other scavengers, feed from these dead animals, it becomes intoxicated and dies.

GUNSHOT

Some unscrupulous hunters shoot at the condors, sometime with the erroneous belief that they attack their livestock, when in reality it is a scavenger species.

WHAT COULD BE DONE?

  • There is a special type of bullet that do not contain lead (ecological or monolithic bullets) and therefore do not leave any toxic remains in the environment. Likewise this prevents the contamination of the soil and water.

  • Do not leave remains of dead shot animals or bullet debris in nature.
